Movie adaptations of video games always seem to be plagued; they never do well – either they’re at best not awful or usually downright awful. You’d have thought film companies would have realised by now that a concept that makes a video game franchise successful won’t necessarily translate to the big screen. So should we admire or bemoan their persistence…?

The best bet we have of seeing a decent video game movie rests in the hands of Sony and their cinematic interpretations of Naughty Dog’s Playstation games. Naughty Dog are well known for not only making fantastic games, but for being very cinematic anyway. Surely these must be good films! So far they’ve announced film versions of both The Last of Us and Uncharted, filling fans with simultaneous dread and excitement.

Uncharted has been in development for years, never quite lifting off the ground. But their latest boost in progress can be attributed largely to Marvel.

Since Sony own the rights to Spider-Man and are working with Marvel for Spider-Man: Homecoming, it’s no surprise that Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman has seen the latest cut of the new Spider-Man film. It’s said that apparently this has inspired a breakthrough for Uncharted… What’s so great about this new Spider-Man? Tom Holland.

He was without doubt one of the highlights of Captain America: Civil War, the character and actors debut, and it’s Holland’s charisma that is pushing the excitement for Homecoming. Rothman has clearly spotted Holland’s talent and is keen to recruit him for more Sony projects – namely, the Uncharted project they just can’t get moving.

So Tom Holland has now been cast as treasure-hunter Nathan Drake.

‘But isn’t he a bit young to play Nate Drake?’ many may ask. Not necessarily. We’ve seen a young Nate before in the last two games, Drake’s Deception and A Theif’s End. Hence the idea to centre the film around a young Nate, making it a prequel.

This could work very well – there’s a big gap in between Nate meeting mentor Sully in the 3rd games flashback and the beginning of the 1st game. They have so much to play with here – and with Tom Holland as the lovable hero Nate, how could this go wrong? Finally, a video game movie that may be on to a winner!
