Tom Holland, Jacob Batalon and Zendaya post mysteriously contradicting Spider-Man Instagram posts… but what’s up with the titles?
Things tend to come in threes; Spider-Man movies, Star Wars trilogies… even new Marvel titles apparently.
New film titles aren’t often a big thing – it’s only occasionally we get excited about what the next Avengers or Star Wars film will be called. But with Spider-Man including the word ‘Home’ in each title, it leaves a lot of people speculating.
Cut to last night: I was happily scrolling through Instagram when I see Tom Holland post a never-before-seen image of the new film along with a title. ‘Oh! News on the upcoming Spider-Man film?’ I thought.
Yes… and no.
It turns out that Zendaya and Batalon posted something similar… but contradictory.

So What’s Going On with these Spider-Man Titles?
‘What’ indeed!
Holland’s post claimed the new title would be called Spider-Man: Phone Home, prompting confused comments from Zendaya (“What the hell) and Batalon (“Woah woah.. wait.. why is your different?!?🤯”). Batalon posted another image with a different title – Spider-Man: Home-Wrecker, with comments from Holland (“Wait what?!?!?!?”) and Zendaya again (“I’m confused”). And she’s right to be confused because her post with yet another image claimed the title would Spider-Man: Home Slice, to which Batalon says “Okay now this is just ridiculous… we have to talk to Jon!!😤” to which Holland agrees (“Right… I have had enough of this! I’m calling Jon”).
It was only the day after that Marvel releases a short video (see above) of Holland exiting director Jon Watts’ office claiming that they were given fake titles again to stop Holland, famous for giving away spoilers, before revealing the real title – Spider-Man: No Way Home.

But Why Post Three Fake Titles?
‘Why’ indeed!
As of yet, we don’t exactly know. But I can think of two distinct possibilities…
- Possibility 1:
The recent Covid pandemic lockdowns have had a real impact on the film industry, resulting in Black Widow being delayed and subsequently meaning we haven’t had a Marvel film since July 2019 (the previous Spidey film). As a result, Marvel’s lost that momentum they spent so long building. Perhaps a bit of Instagram-fueled buzz is what they need to get back on track and increase publicity. This seems even more likely given the seemingly scripted comments made on each other’s posts.

But I prefer…
- Possibility 2:
The internet has been awash for some months now about the possibility of previous Spider-Men Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s incarnations making a cameo.
And it’s certainly not out of the question. Endgame introduced the concept of alternate universes and timelines and the next Doctor Strange film is called the Multiverse of Madness… and Doctor Strange will even be in No Way Home…
If that wasn’t enough reason for thinking it’s a possibility, now we’ve got this: three distinct titles coming out at once. Three different titles perhaps representing three different Spider-Men at once…
And then a fourth title; the official one, No Way Home. Could that pave way four a fourth Spider-Man. Maybe even comic fan-favourite Miles Morales…?
A stretch? Maybe. But a possibility – yes. We can only hope!
But one thing’s for sure – Marvel will definitely have something exciting for us up their sleeves.
Spider-Man: No Way Home will (hopefully) be released Christmas 2021.
