Disney certainly aren’t wasting their money after buying the Star Wars franchise. It seems several times a week we see new Star Wars news stories doing their rounds on the internet; rumours here, castings there, plot details somewhere over there – on and on and on. Disney are absolutely gunning for it now they’ve got Star Wars. And that’s a good thing! Lucas created such a huge, detailed world that ash the potential to be explored indefinitely. So long as Disney can keep the films exciting and continue pleasing audiences then they can squeeze an unlimited number of films from this franchise

There is one issue mentioned there though – continue pleasing audiences….

Obviously if any franchise starts to lose fans, then it eventually crumbles. The critics hate it, the fans hate it, people won’t go to see it, won’t buy the DVD, won’t buy the merchandise… These things occasionally happen. So the studios wipe up the flop and don’t mention it again (until maybe they try to reboot it).

It’s unlikely this will ever happen to Star Wars – at least it seems nearly impossible right now (who knows what the future will bring). Yet with these spin-off films set in between the main ‘episodes’ they have to be careful. They will soon run the risk of making too much of them, making them irrelevant to the main canon of episodes and people could get bored of them, wondering what’s the point when they’re nothing to do with the larger, over-arching story. Aside from being a genuinely decent film, a large part of what made Rogue One so enjoyable was the countless references to the original films (this even rings true with The Force Awakens). It looks like Disney are capitalising on this by making a young Han Solo spin-off film – something people are very excited about. So why stick to just a Han Solo spin-off…?

After the Han Solo film, there is a slot set aside for another Star Wars Story, but it’s so far untitled with no details on plot, characters or where it will fit in the timeline. There’s been talk of maybe Yoda getting his own film. This is possible. But what would be better? Of course – an Obi-Wan Kenobi film!

Obi-Wan Kenobi has been in all main episodes other than Episode VII and is one of the most central, recurring and iconic characters in the Star Wars universe. To make a film of him would certainly result in a huge success.

More than this, it actually makes sense in terms of story. There’s a huge gap in between Episode III and Episode IV. Yes, Rogue One narrowed the gap by acting as a semi-prequel to Episode IV, the ending directly leading onto the start of A New Hope – but there are a number of years in between even Rogue One and the end of Episode III. So much happens, but we don’t see any of it. Surely Obi-Wan had some involvement in the war other than just sitting around on a desert planet waiting for Luke to get older. He’s such an interesting character, there are years of his life we don’t see and don’t know about that are currently going to waste. He does make an appearance in Rebels (though I haven’t watched the show…yet) but this doesn’t have as large an audience as a movie would. This character deserves a large audience.

This would also serve to add a bit of a variety to these character-centric spin-off films. Han Solo gets his own movie – he’s younger. If Yoda gets his own movie, he will likely be younger too. With this Obi-Wan film, set in between Episode III and Episode IV he will be an older man. Characters in their own spin-off films do not always have to be younger – only look at Logan to see how excellent a film like this could be.

But this is just talk. Will it happen? Maybe. But would Ewan McGregor even reprise the role if Disney asked?

Of course he would! He’s been saying it for years, but now that the individual Star Wars Anthology Stories are kicking off, being successful and generating a buzz, it’s likely to happen now more than ever before.

He’s asked frequently if he would do it and if he’s been approached. Sadly, he hasn’t yet been approached for it, but he was honest at the Edinburgh Film Festival in 2015 that he would be “happy to do the story from episodes three where I finish up and Alec Guinness starts” and he told EW: “There’s no official offer, and I haven’t met them about it or anything. But I’ve always said that I’d be happy to do it if they wanted to do it. It would be a good segue between the last episode of the prequels and the new episodes.”

Most recently, he discussed the possibility on the Jimmy Kimmel show.

Like he says, there’s been no end to interviewers and fans alike speculating on the possibility and asking if it might happen. Surely Disney will get the hint – Ewan McGregor’s up for it, we’re up for it – make an Obi-Wan Kenobi Anthology film!

  1. Star Wars Rouge One didn’t disappoint as a spin off Star Wars movie. Great expectations from this one now. Would love to watch Ewan McGregor reprising the role once again. Hope 2020 comes soon.
